Modern archaeologists have developed a dating system Obsidian hydration dating to calculate the age of Obsidian artifacts. Obsidian was also used on Rapa Nui (Easter island) for edged tools such as Mataia and the pupils of the eyes of their Moai (statues). Obsidian cores and blades were traded great distances inland from the coast. Similar tracing techniques have allowed obsidian to be identified in Greece also as coming from either Melos, Nisyros or Yiali, islands in the Aegean Sea. Each volcano and in some cases each volcanic eruption produces a distinguishable type of obsidian, making it possible for archaeologists to trace the origins of a particular artifact. Native American people traded obsidian throughout North America. Called a macuahuitl, the weapon was capable of inflicting terrible injuries, combining the sharp cutting edge of an obsidian blade with the ragged cut of a serrated weapon. Mesoamericans also made a type of sword with obsidian blades mounted in a wooden body. Pre-Columbian Mesoamericans' use of obsidian was extensive and sophisticated, including carved and worked obsidian for tools and decorative objects. It was also polished to create early mirrors. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic conchoidal fracture. Obsidian was highly valued in certain Stone Age cultures because, like flint, it could be fractured to produce sharp blades or arrowheads. Obsidian can also be found in the following countries: Armenia, Turkey, Italy, Mexico, Greece and Scotland. US states including Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Utah, and Idaho. Yellowstone National Park has a mountainside containing much obsidian located between Mammoth Hot Springs and the Norris Geyser Basin, and deposits can be found in many other western Among other places, large obsidan flows are found within the calderas of Newberry Volcano and Medicine Lake Volcano in the Cascade Range of western North America, and at Inyo Craters east of the Sierra Nevada in California. Obsidian can be found in many locations around the world which have experienced rhyolitic eruptions. These bubbles can produce interesting effects such as a golden sheen ( sheen obsidian) or a rainbow sheen ( rainbow obsidian). It may contain patterns of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow, aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing before being cooled. In some stones, the inclusion of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern ( snowflake obsidian). Iron and magnesium typically give the obsidian a dark green to brown to black color. Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. Tektites were once thought by many to be obsidian produced by lunar volcanic eruptions, though few scientists now adhere to this hypothesis. Obsidian has a low water content when fresh, typically less than 1% water by weight, but becomes progressively hydrated when exposed to groundwater, forming perlite. This breakdown of obsidian is accelerated by the presence of water. Because obsidian is metastable at the earth's surface (over time the glass becomes fine-grained mineral crystals), no obsidian has been found that is older than Cretaceous age. Crystalline rocks with obsidian's composition include granite and rhyolite. Obsidian consists mainly of SiO 2 ( silicon dioxide), usually 70% or more. Though obsidian is dark in color similar to mafic rocks such as basalt, obsidian's composition is extremely felsic. It is sometimes classified as a mineraloid. Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because as a glass it is not crystalline in addition, its composition is too complex to comprise a single mineral.

Among the 17 participants in the Men’s Physique category, Anton won an amazing 4th place. You might recognize him as the face of the men's collection 1965. He is not very well known in our Czechoslovakia region yet, but he sure is big in America as he competed 5 times at the Olympia already. In addition to Roelly, Anton Antipov also made an appearance. Roelly competed in the Open category, in which he placed 5th out of 14 competitors. Roelly is modest and very friendly, so he didn't say a "no" to the fans' wishes to take photos with him. Roelly seemed calm and peaceful, he told us about his trip, his stay in Prague and his ideas for new men's fitness clothes. Meeting him at the NEBBIA stand was a huge deal for many members of our team. The organizers did not hesitate and together with the audience shared a minute of silence for Shawn. However, during the event, we and the entire bodybuilding world were hit by the sad news of the sudden passing of Shawn Rhoden. The music, lighting, stage and ambience of the Hilton Hotel were very professional and represented the thorough preparation of the organizers and sponsors. Professional bodybuilders, fitness, staff and moderators took care of a great spectator experience. The four winners with the highest number of lifts received vouchers worth a total of € 500!ĮVLS was simply epic. Everyone wanted to compete and get a package of prizes from NEBBIA and Extrifit, which we prepared for all competitors. It was a magnet for all visitors, both men and women. During the whole EVLS, we hosted a fitness challenge in Biceps lifts. In addition, we also prepared a NEBBIA photo wall for visitors. Visitors could buy limited NEBBIA women's and men's fitness clothing with the EVLS Prague 2021 logo. The winner was excited to receive a € 150 voucher!Īs the main partner of EVLS, we also shared a booth with the organizer. They were encouraged by our NEBBIA girls and the whole store staff. The contestants had to do as many push-ups as they could in under 1 min. We also hosted a fitness challenge there. Everyone was welcome to come to meet the founders of NEBBIA and the icons of the Czech fitness scene Lucia Březinová and Tomáš Gašparík. Not as big as EVLS, but just as enjoyable. We took photos, filmed and handed out discount vouchers to fellow passengers.Ī-one-of-a-kind competition also took place in our NEBBIA store in Westfield Chodov in Prague. The 6-hour train journey was 100% team building, and each passenger on the train took notice of Deniska and Klaudia's beautiful #NEBBIAgirls outfits. They dressed in brand new outfits tailored exclusively for them by our head designer Stanka. In addition to the NEBBIA team members, we also travelled with two of our NEBBIA girls: Klaudia Mikitková and Denisa Tran Vanová. NEBBIA, as one of the main partners, was there to support the athletes and document the whole event! In this article, in addition to the results, we bring you exclusive photos from behind the scenes and from the stage! The winners shared a sum of $ 45,000 and a 5 kg bronze trophy. Famous names such as Anton Antipov, Roelly Winklaar, Samson Dauda and Czech representatives such as Pavel Beran, Miroslav Juríček, the Linhart sisters and many others also performed on the stage. Athletes faced each other in 6 categories: fitness bikini, women's figure, men's physique, classic physique, 212 bodybuilding and men's open. After a three-year break, the EVLS professional fitness competition took place in Prague again on Saturday, November 6 at the Hilton Hotel. Imagine feeling helpless, ashamed, completely vulnerable-publicly and brutally stripped of everything that makes you you. Imagine the ice-cold water filling your mouth and lungs, the pressure bruising your skin, turning your joints to putty. How could you-a mere mortal-possibly understand? Imagine being stripped of your clothes, then blasted with a fire hose in front of a laughing crowd. And I sobbed in despair.Įven for a god of poetry such as myself, it is difficult to describe how I felt. My mind stewed in confusion, but one memory floated to the surface-the voice of my father, Zeus: YOUR FAULT. My ribs felt broken, though that shouldn’t have been possible. My nostrils burned with the stench of rancid bologna and used diapers. I lay groaning and aching in the open Dumpster. Is anything sadder than the sound of a god hitting a pile of garbage bags? I plunged into a narrow canyon between two buildings and BAM! I tried to change into a cloud or teleport across the world or do a hundred other things that should have been easy for me, but I just kept falling. I visited my wrath upon Britney Spears at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.īut in all my immortal life, I never before crash-landed in a Dumpster. I blessed Babe Ruth with three home runs in game four of the 1926 World Series. I inflicted a plague on the Greeks who besieged Troy. In my four thousand six hundred and twelve years, I have done many things. The Dark Prophecy is back to the action quicker than one of Artemis' Hunters can draw her bow.Enable “Document outline” ( View > Show document outline ) for easier navigation of chapters. And the dedication of the ex-hunter couple Emmie and Jo to their mortal life as parents in the Waystation adds nice depth to the story. His endearing relationship with Meg, his polar opposite, continues to develop on the sidelines of all the action. There's less focus on character development here than in the first book, The Hidden Oracle, mostly because Apollo has already accepted his fate as a tortured mortal. It's all big fun, but it does blur together after a while. By the end of the book you'll need the help of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, just to recall when Apollo and friends fought the giant serpent, when they were set upon by pits of smaller venomous snakes or weird creatures with faces below their armpits, or by Germani soldiers, or by helmeted fighting ostriches. If you like fighting mythological creatures and impossible quests that lead to more impossible quests and more fighting mythological creatures, you will thoroughly dig this sequel. The multistep quest sounds hard enough, but to make matters worse, both the bloodthirsty megalomaniac Commodus and the oracle Trophonius have very old scores to settle with Apollo. They must be saved, and soon, and the throne of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, must be recovered or their friends will be forced to fight in the arena and their daughter will go mad. They explain that slowly Commodus had kidnapped everyone, including the griffins and Emmie and Jo's 7-year-old adopted daughter. When Apollo and friends enter, the many rooms are empty except for the ex-hunters Emmie and Jo. With the help of former Artemis hunters, they escape to the Waystation, a sentient building that houses an assortment of demigods, griffins, and the formerly immortal. The streets are teaming with the minions of Emperor Commodus - very strong creatures called blemmyae with faces in their chests. In THE DARK PROPHECY, when Apollo, Leo, and Calypso land in Indianapolis atop their metal dragon Festus, they're greeted with an ambush. For animal-loving kids, expect one sad animal death and a commitment by characters to take care of the mistreated animals. For kids who dislike snakes, watch out for the giant serpent and the pit of poisonous vipers. The violence ratchets up a little from the last book thanks to arena fighting (with tortured animals - blame Commodus), some beheadings (three simply because Commodus was bored), and lots of skirmishes with mythological creatures who cause injuries to mortals. Like in the first book, there's a lot to learn about mythology and history, especially about the Roman Emperor Commodus' reign. And, for extra credit, reading the Apollo chapter in Percy Jackson's Greek Gods helps when our "suddenly mortal and very unhappy about it" narrator Apollo recounts key moments of his godly life. The storyline picks up after the war at the end of the Heroes of Olympus, and many old favorite characters make cameos or are mentioned (yay, Leo!). It helps to read them both before digging into the Trials of Apollo series. Did you follow that? The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series came first, then the Heroes of Olympus. Parents need to know that The Dark Prophecy is the second book in a series that's a spin-off of a Percy Jackson spin-off series. But it may also have practical applications too, like helping develop autonomous vehicles that can travel in tight formation and work in coordinated groups without colliding. Curiosity drives this research, of course. All these synchronized movements can happen so fast within flocks, herds, swarms and schools that some scientists once thought it required animal ESP!īiologists, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists and engineers are all working to figure out how animals carry out these displays. Not all of these species are commonly kept as pets. This bird is common in the western and central regions of Southern Africa. There are a total of 9 species of lovebird currently discovered globally. Names of Birds: About it: Canary: Canary is a small yellow bird belonging to the finch family. These little pocket parrots are colorful additions to a family and a relatively low-maintenance bird for beginner owners. Large schools of fish can appear to behave like murmurations, as do groups of some swarming insects, including honeybees. Lovebirds are adorable birds to keep as pets since they are cuddly, just as their name suggests. And they do all this while flying as fast as they can. From these simulations, it seems that each bird must keep track of seven neighbors and adjust based on what they’re doing to keep the murmuration from falling apart in a chaotic mess. Mathematicians and computer scientists try to create virtual murmurations using rules that birds might follow in a flock – like moving in the same direction as their neighbor, staying close and not colliding. The singer is a small, warm-toned sparrow with a rusty cap, neat white eyering, and pink bill. reaching thousands, and while wintering, those flocks can number in the millions. Starlings on the edge frequently move deeper into the flock. The clear, bouncing-ball trill of the Field Sparrow is a familiar summer sound in brushy fields and roadsides of the East and Midwest. Once those birds begin to turn, the message spreads fast: about 20 to 40 meters per second, ScienceNOW reports, meaning a flock of 400 birds needs just about half a second to turn. 28 Bird Species Whose Names Prove Ornithologists Have A Sense Of Humor. Starlings are closer to their side neighbors than those in front or behind. The videos reveal that the birds are not as densely packed as they might appear from the ground there is room to maneuver. The flock is a dense cluster, but the birds do not often collide. Growing several plants per bucket which would require several smaller holes and pots. 5 Now, if there were another way to heaven doubtless he would have made it known to us. Him he placed in our stead to suffer misery, hell and death, and let him drink our cup to the dregs. Christ teaches here that we are not lost, but have eternal life that is, that God has so loved us that he allowed the ransom to cost him his only beloved child. But they must perish, since they fain would come to the Father without a mediator, without Christ, whom the Father holds up before us out of his gracious goodness. They wish to discover the sacrifice or price of salvation in themselves and to ignore Christ as mediator. This is no less than saying: I will work enough to escape perdition I will turn my sins into vapor, to disappear and open a way into heaven. Bridget, shall be eternally saved and all the books are full of like teachings. 4 Now, the schools teach that man is to be saved by his own works they say: Whosoever becomes a monk or nun, or repeats every day the little prayer of St. Through him we are to come to the Father with the price we can pay nothing is accomplished. God has intervened by placing as mediator one who is alike true God and true man. Where God and man oppose each other, man meets with instant destruction, for he cannot stand against God. But let us thank the Father for ordering it as he has, and placing between us one who is God and equal with God, and also man, on a level with man for we are human and he is God. It would be at the peril of our lives, for we should be despising the priceless sacrifice which the Father made for us. But their plans did not result as they intended they should. That means to reject Christ as a mediator, as Jeremiah tells us did the godless, who thought and said: Let us send wood to him as his food, and we will root him out of the land, and there will be no remembrance of his name. Now, the schools teach us to approach the Father without a mediator, through our own good works. The Holy Spirit teaches everywhere that we do not possess the Father except through a mediator, and he will not allow us to approach the Father without one. 3 What is now the cost of redemption? Today's Gospel points this out. The Turk and Jew, too, believe in God, but without means and mediator. I have often said that faith alone is not sufficient before God, but the price of redemption must also be in evidence. Now, Christ says here, the Father so loved the world that he gave his beloved child for the world, and instituted for us a way to come to him that way is Christ. To simply fear the Father confers no benefit but to bear to him a companionable love of rare quality makes us blessed. Everything Christ does tends to help us to acquire a loving confidence in the Father. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.” 2 Now, notice that Christ represents the Father to us as none else than the all-loving and magnetic one, and he brings us through himself to the Father. Therefore, examine only the words themselves they are weighty, precious and comforting beyond measure. Now, as you have often heard, the Gospel teaches nothing but that one must learn to know Christ alone, and so the Holy Spirit teaches nothing more. Joh 3:16 | Luther | STEP | ] 1 This is another of the true Gospel lessons, such as John is accustomed to write for he writes in a way to make him alone worthy the name of an evangelist.
